Tragedy struck at the popular Oshodi Post Office area of Lagos State, on Monday, as a two storey Shopping Complex, under construction, collapsed, killing about three people instantly, while an additional nine others were rescued under the rubbles, by sympathizsers and rescue workers, who quickly rushed to the scene.

Scores of other victims, mostly artisans and food vendors were also believed to have been trapped underneath the collapsed building, as officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, their counterparts from both the National Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross officials tried frantically to ensure that no one was left underneath the debris of the collapsed building.

Nigerian Tribune however gathered that the incident occurred at about 9 am after the resumption of duties by about 40 construction workers.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Emergency management Agency (LASEMA), said not less than 10 persons were rescued from the rubbles of a collapsed shopping complex, being redeveloped at Kairo Market, Oshodi.

The two-storey blocks of shops, at final stage of completion, reportedly came down around 9.30a.m., trapping some workmen who had arrived early on site.

As at press time, LASEMA operations personnel and relevant stakeholders like the Fire and Safety Services, LASPDA, Police, Red Cross, Civil Defence and the construction company on site, were still digging through the rubbles for more survivors.

Speaking on the incident, General Manager/CEO LASEMA, Dr. Oluwafemi Oke – Osanyintolu, noted that the most important mission of LASEMA and others at the site was to rescue trapped persons. He said” As you can see, the earth – moving equipment are working non- stop, perusing the rubble so that we can bring out more survivors alive.”

He urged the restive residents and sympathizers to be calm and co-operative for the rescue operation to be successful.

Dr. Oke – Osanyintolu also said that the injured were receiving treatment at the Accident and Emergency Centre, at the Lagos – Ibadan Express way, while the only dead person had been deposited at the mortuary.
