When police arrived on scene, Yeardley was unresponsive. A member of the men’s lacrosse team at the University of Virginia, George Huguely, 22, has now been charged with her murder.

According to a police statement, Yeardley and Huguely had a prior relationship. “Police are treating the case as a homicide investigation at this time,” said the statement.

During that interview, Huguely said “I sympathize for the team… They’ve been scrutinized so hard and no one knows what has happened yet. In This country, you’re supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. I think that’s the way it should be.”

All charges were eventually dropped against Duke’s team members.

Huguely was questioned by police early Monday morning at his apartment, and subsequently arrested around 6 a.m., according to Police Chief Tim Longo.
