Julius Malema appeared before an ANC disciplinary committee on Monday, its chairperson Derek Hanekom confirmed.

"He was present, he was represented by Mathews Phosa," said Hanekom, who is also an ANC national executive committee member and deputy minister of science and technology.

He said the disciplinary hearing lasted until 16:30 and was adjourned to Tuesday next week.

This was after ANCYL spokesperson Floyd Shivambu maintained throughout the day that the organisation was unaware of proceedings against Malema for his recent public utterances.

"What are you talking about? Where do you get all these things?" he said when asked to clarify conflicting reports on Malema's attendance.

The hearing would reportedly tackle Malema's singing of an anti-apartheid song with the lyrics "shoot the boer", calling a BBC journalist a "bastard" and "bloody agent" and undermining South Africa's role as a mediator in Zimbabwe.

ANC spokesperson Brian Sokutu said the organisation would not be commenting on the matter at least until the disciplinary hearing had run its course.

"That matter is being kept under wraps. I don't think the movement wants to comment on the matter.

"The movement wants the process to takes its course to give the hearing a chance before it says anything," said Sokutu.

Zuma's HIV test

President Jacob Zuma will publicly take an HIV test on World Aids Day, as part of a major new campaign by the government to demonstrate its commitment to the fight against the disease.


Two presidency sources confirmed that Zuma will take the test to signal the shift from the ambiguous messages about HIV/Aids under Thabo Mbeki's administration.

The results will, however, not be made known.

Zuma will also be the face of a nationwide campaign that will encourage citizens to undergo HIV tests, with polling stations used for the 2009 general elections being transformed into testing sites. The campaign is due to kick off in March next year.

This is a significant departure from government's past position on HIV/Aids, where political leaders were not involved in awareness campaigns.

In 2001 Mbeki said in a television interview that he would not take an HIV test because "I don't believe that stunts -- publicity stunts -- help in addressing the health needs of our people".

Zuma will compel his Cabinet to be tested publicly as part of the awareness campaign.

"The president sees HIV not as just a health issue, but as a socioeconomic issue that will be with us for a long time," a government official told the Mail & Guardian. "The mixed messages of the past harmed us; we're trying to reverse the lost years."

The driving force behind the Aids campaign is Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, who had a hand in Zuma's recent speech to the National Council of Provinces.

Eugene Terre'Blanche's Sex scandal: Semen found on Terre'Blanche's 'private part'

Spokesperson for police National Commissioner General Bheki Cele said on Sunday that semen had been found on the body of Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging leader Eugene Terre'Blanche.

"His body was found half naked with semen on his private part. That is not new information, it has always been part of the evidence," said Nonkululeko Mbatha.

Cele told a Sunday newspaper that the "sex issue" had always been there because Terre'Blanche's body had been found with his pants down and "were wet with semen".

However, Cele said there was no condom found on the scene, [as reported in the media last week].

There were sex rumours in the right-wing leader's murder case, that the defence decided to abandon in the Ventersdorp Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Lawyer Puna Moroko, representing one of the two accused of Terre'Blanche's death -- Chris Mahlangu (28) -- told journalists outside the court that his client initially spoke of being sodomised by the AWB leader, but that further questioning had revealed this could not be true.

"He [Mahlangu] mentioned ‘sodomy' to me [but] the consultation was very short ... It didn't satisfy me, it just did not make sense to me, that's why I abandoned it," said Moroko.

"I am not satisfied that there was sodomy and my client accepted my advice."

Adjournment
The court on Wednesday extended the detention of the accused. Magistrate Magaola Foso adjourned the case to May 10 to allow more time for police investigations and a bail application.

"You are in custody until then," Foso told the elder of the two suspects in court.

Terre'Blanche was bludgeoned and hacked to death on April 3 at his farm outside Ventersdorp.

The killing has brought South Africa's long-standing racial tensions to the surface, two months before the country is due to host the Soccer World Cup.

A lawyer representing two South African black farmer workers accused of killing white supremacist leader Eugene Terre’Blanche has said his clients killed him in self defence after he tried to have sex ‘with one or both’ of the workers.

“My instructions from my client are that there was some sodomy going on and it sparked the murder of Mr Terre’Blanche. This is going to form part of our defence during trial,’ lawyer Puna Moroko, told the Sunday Times newspaper.

Terre’Blanche was beaten and stabbed to death at his farm on April 3 by two farm workers he employed, one aged 15 and the other 28. Questions were immediately raised on how he broke the law by hiring an under-age youth.

Curiously the youths did not run away after the murder but actually waited for the police to arrive at the farm. Terre’Blanche was found dead in his bed with his trousers around his knees.

Another lawyer representing the older youth says his client claims to have been plied with alcohol by Terre’Blanche and that “something shocking happened” that day.

“I have consulted with my client and I am satisfied that something shocking happened on that day,” Zola Majavu told the Sunday Times. “I will disclose fully what my client told me happened during trial.” He also said his client “has undergone all the necessary tests that I need to prove his case.” Nehanda Radio
