Gary Mark Gilmore's Profile

Gary Mark Gilmore (December 4, 1940 – January 17, 1977) was an American criminal and spree killer who gained international notoriety for demanding that his death sentence be fulfilled following two murders he committed in Utah. He became the first person executed in the United States after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a new series of death penalty statutes in the 1976 decision Gregg v. Georgia (these new statutes avoiding the problems that had led earlier death penalty statutes to be deemed unconstitutional in Furman v. Georgia). Gilmore was executed by firing squad and remained the last person to be killed that way in the United States until John Albert Taylor died in the same way in 1996.

Gilmore was born in Waco, Texas, the second of four sons born to Frank and Bessie Gilmore. His parents drifted around the Western United States while he and his brothers grew up, his father earning a living selling advertising space in magazines. Gilmore was raised in a dysfunctional family, and had a horrible relationship with his father. Gary's brother Mikal described their father as a "cruel and unreasonable man." Frank Gilmore's mother claimed that he was the illegitimate son of magician Harry Houdini, who rejected his paternity. Mikal has said he believes the story is not true, however his father believed this.

The Gilmore family settled in Portland, Oregon in 1952. Gilmore began getting into trouble with the law as a teenager, with offenses ranging from shoplifting, car theft and assault and battery. Although Gilmore had an I.Q. of 133, had high scores on both scholastic and academic tests, and clear artistic skills, he dropped out of high school at age 14. He ran away from home with a friend to Texas to see his place of birth, returning to Portland after several months.

The Murders he committed
On the evening of July 19, 1976, Gilmore robbed and murdered Max Jensen, a Sinclair gas station employee in Orem, Utah. The next evening, he robbed and murdered Bennie Bushnell, a motel manager in Provo. He murdered these people even though they complied with his demands. As he disposed of his .22 caliber pistol used in both killings, he accidentally shot himself in the hand, leaving a trail of blood from the gun to the service garage where he had left his truck to be repaired shortly before the murder of Bushnell. The garage owner, seeing the blood and hearing on a police scanner of the shooting at the nearby motel, wrote down Gilmore's license number and called the police. Gilmore's cousin, Brenda, turned him in to police shortly thereafter, after he placed a phone call to her asking for bandages and painkillers for the injury to his hand. Gilmore gave up without a fight as he was trying to drive out of Provo. He was charged with the murders of Bushnell and Jensen, although the latter case never went to trial, apparently because there were no eyewitnesses.

Execution
Gary Gilmore was executed by firing squad on January 17, 1977, at 8:07 a.m. The night before, Gilmore had requested an all-night gathering of friends and family at the prison mess hall. On the evening before his execution, he was served a last meal consisting of a steak, potatoes, milk and coffee, of which he consumed only the milk and coffee. His uncle, Vern Damico, who attended the gathering later claimed to have secretly smuggled in three small, one-ounce Jack Daniels whisky shot bottles for Gilmore which he supposedly consumed.

By making the gift endowed, the Ndamukong Suh Scholarship will exist in perpetuity.

His senior year in basketball, he averaged a double-double. However, Bradford was a three-star recruit not that highly ranked among the high school class of 2006,
with his highest ranking being No. 12 amongst only Pro-Style quarterbacks by recruiting source Rivals.com, behind Pat Devlin, Juice Williams, Josh Freeman, and being overshadowed by the likes of five-star recruits Mitch Mustain, Matthew Stafford and Tim Tebow.

In 2008, as a redshirt sophomore, Bradford became the second sophomore to win a Heisman Trophy. Bradford also holds the NCAA record for touchdown passes by a freshman, with 36.

In 2009, Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett declared January 13 as "Sam Bradford Day" in Oklahoma City.

On April 22, 2010, Bradford was selected by the St. Louis Rams as the first overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. It was the first time the Rams selected a quarterback in the first round of a draft since the selection of Bill Munson in the 1964 NFL Draft. Personal Life
Bradford is an official citizen of the Cherokee Nation.Bradford is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. His father, Kent Bradford, was an offensive lineman for the Sooners from 1977-78.

Sam Bradford: QuarterBack(QB)
Height:6'4"
Weight:236 lbs.
Arm Length:34 3/8 in.
Hand Size:9 1/2 in.
College:Oklahoma
Conference:Big 12
Selected by: St. Louis Rams

Pick Analysis: The Rams tab Sam Bradford to be their new franchise quarterback. Though Bradford missed most of the 2009 season nursing a shoulder injury, his strong pre-draft workouts, intangibles and game tape made him the right choice in St. Louis. While the Rams don't have many weapons around him, Bradford gives the team an accurate thrower with the skills to develop into an elite quarterback as the team builds around him.

Bradford won the Heisman Trophy as a redshirt sophomore in 2008 and then decided after his junior year to come out early. He missed most of the season after injuring and then re-injuring his shoulder which required surgery to repair in October of 2009. He has won a lot of games between his years at Oklahoma as well as during high school. He can be extremely accurate in the short to intermediate passing game and will flash the ability to time his throws leading his receivers so that they can catch the ball in stride when going downfield. While he may need a year or two to develop into a starting quarterback, he does have a tremendous upside.

Political Organization Profile: The African National Congress (ANC)

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

The African National Congress (ANC) led the South African liberation from apartheid, and has dominated the country's politics in the years since. The political party has won every election since the end of apartheid with overwhelming support, turning South Africa into a virtual one-party state.

In April 2009 the party, led by its leader Jacob G. Zuma, won its fourth consecutive electoral victory. Parliament elects the president, but the A.N.C.'s dominance assures that Mr. Zuma will take the oath of office on May 9.

Final results showed that the A.N.C. won the April 22 election with 66 percent of the vote, less than its victory margin in 2004 but an impressive tally nonetheless after a dissident group had broken away to form its own party. The A.N.C. won in eight of South Africa's nine provinces, the only exception being Western Cape, where it lost to the Democratic Alliance, a political sanctuary for the nation's white and mixed-race minorities.

Many now worry about the political future of the nation regarded as the democratic anchor of the continent.

The A.N.C. was formed in 1912 by well-educated, middle-class South African blacks, many of whom studied in American universities. Its initial character was more lawyerly than radical, but the foundation of its Youth League in the 1940s changed the group's focus. New leaders, including Nelson Mandela, favored more militant tactics as they sought to turn the A.N.C. into a mass movement.

The group was banned in the 1960s. A year later, it formed a military wing and began carrying out violent sabotage missions. Mr. Mandela was sentenced to life in prison in 1964 for attempting to overthrow the government.

In 1990 the party was unbanned, and Mr. Mandela was released from prison. Over the next four years Mr. Mandela and the A.N.C. helped lead to the dismantling of apartheid. In 1994 Mr. Mandela became the first president of post-apartheid South Africa.

Mr. Mandela served as president until 1999, when his chosen successor, Thabo Mbeki, took over. By 2007 the A.N.C. faced a potentially crippling leadership struggle. Mr. Zuma, a Zulu politician idolized in the eastern part of the country, ousted Mr. Mbeki for the top job in the party hierarchy. While it seemed that the infighting would leave the A.N.C. vulnerable to a credible rival, breakaway movements never developed to such a level. In 2008 Mr. Mbeki resigned as president, paving the way for Mr. Zuma to succeed him.

Mr. Zuma has had brushes with the law. He was acquitted in a 2006 rape trial. And in April 2009 prosecutors, citing procedural reasons, dropped a corruption case that had dogged him for eight years.

South Africa has a population of 48.7 million, and the poor rightfully credit the A.N.C. with giving them a lift. In 1996, two years after the end of apartheid, only 2.5 million people received government grants. That number is now 13.4 million, with most of the money provided for children.

South Africa has the continent's largest economy, and until the recession it enjoyed 10 consecutive years of growth. But wealth favors the few, and in South Africa the chasm of inequality is among the worst in the world. On average, whites still earn nearly 10 times as much as blacks.

Under apartheid, the school system was deliberately set up to provide nonwhites with inferior instruction, but many experts contend that the schools have worsened rather than improved. The A.N.C. government was slow in providing antiretroviral drugs to AIDS patients, allowing 365,000 South Africans to die prematurely, according to a Harvard University study.

Disappointment runs deep among South Africans. But though people complain about corrupt local officials, they rarely aim their anger at the A.N.C.

His personal doctor, it was gathered, checked his blood pressure and decided to take him to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. He never recovered and was pronounced dead shortly after. His body has been moved to his residence in Kano and will be buried according to Islamic rites this morning.

Initial reports said he was shot in the head in the attack which took place at a village called Darki in Wudil Local Government Area, Kano State, while he was returning from Bauchi State where he had gone for his eldest daughter's wedding.

But it was later revealed that he suffered no gunshot wounds. However, given that his blood pressure had shot up during the attack, he might have suffered a massive stroke, leading to his death.

The radical politician, who was instrumental to the victory of Chief MKO Abiola in the June 12, 1993 presidential election in Kano State, was traveling in a Landcruiser SUV in company with three other persons who are believed to be his relations.

Rimi had become politically reclusive in recent times and led a faction of the PDP in Kano called Garkuwa (Shield). He also staunchly supported President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.

He was born in 1940 in Rimi Village, Sumaila Local Government Area, Kano State. According to wikipedia.com, Rimi attended an instructor's course at the Institute of Administration, Zaria. He obtained a General Certificate of Education (GCE) from the University of London.

In 1972, he did a diploma in International Affairs at the London institute of World Affairs, and later obtained a Master's Degree in International Relations. In January 2006, his wife was killed at his home. His son was among those charged for the murder, but was later released. It was treated as an armed robbery case.

Rimi was co-founder with the late Mallam Aminu Kano and other progressives the People's Redemption Party (PRP). In December 1978, he was elected PRP's Deputy National secretary at the party's first national convention in Lagos. He was the PRP candidate in the 1979 general election and was elected the governor of the old Kano State.

After a disagreement with the party's leader, Alhaji Aminu Kano, he defected to the Nigeria Peoples Party (NPP) in 1983 and resigned as governor "on principle". He lost the governorship election that year to Alhaji Sabo Bakin Zuwo, who ran as the PRP candidate.

In 1993, Rimi was appointed Minister of Communications, and later Chairman of NACB and NSPMC.

He was one of the foundation members of the PDP in 1998. He was the Chairman of the Finance Committee of the party.

He was briefly touted as former President Olusegun Obasanjo's running mate in the 1999 presidential election, but Obasanjo eventually settled for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Rimi began to openly oppose Obasanjo and ran against him for PDP's presidential ticket in 2003, although the PDP had insisted that the position was zoned to the South.

He later moved to the Action Congress (AC) in 2006, but returned to the PDP in 2007. In December 2008, he called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), Professor Maurice Iwu, to resign from office, citing irregularities in the presidential election that brought Yar'Adua to power.
