Faisal Shahzad charged with terrorism

Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Faisal Shahzad
A Pakistani-born U.S. citizen was charged Tuesday with terrorism and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction in the botched Times Square bombing. The government said he confessed to receiving explosives training in Pakistan.

Faisal Shahzad — the son of an air force officer in a wealthy Pakistani family — was arrested Monday night, pulled off a plane that was about to fly to the Middle East.

According to the complaint, Shahzad confessed to buying an SUV, rigging it with a homemade bomb and driving it Saturday night into Times Square, where he tried to detonate it.

In Pakistan, intelligence officials said several people had been detained in connection with the Times Square case. But a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation told The Associated Press the FBI is not aware of any arrests in Pakistan related to the case.

Shahzad admitted to receiving bomb-making training in Waziristan, the lawless tribal region where the Pakistani Taliban operates with near impunity, but there is no mention of al-Qaida in the complaint filed in Manhattan federal court. The complaint said he returned from Pakistan in February, telling an immigration agent that he had been visiting his parents for five months and had left his wife behind.

"Based on what we know so far, it is clear that this was a terrorist plot aimed at murdering Americans in one of the busiest places in our country," Attorney General Eric Holder said in Washington.

Shahzad was on board a Dubai-bound flight that was taxiing away from the gate at Kennedy Airport late Monday when the plane was turned around and federal authorities took him into custody, law enforcement officials said. Federal officials had placed him on a "no-fly" list hours before his arrest.

Holder said Shahzad was talking to investigators, providing them with valuable information, The FBI read Shahzad his constitutional rights after he provided the information, and he continued to cooperate, FBI Deputy Director John Pistole said.

Shahzad's court appearance Tuesday was delayed, in part because he was cooperating with authorities.
President Barack Obama said "hundreds of lives" may have been saved Saturday night by the quick action of ordinary citizens and law enforcement authorities who raised the alarm about the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder rigged with a crude bomb made of gasoline, propane and fireworks. The SUV, which had begun smoking, was parked on a bustling street in Times Square.

"As Americans and as a nation, we will not be terrorized. We will not cower in fear. We will not be intimidated," Obama said.

Shahzad, 30, became a naturalized U.S. citizen last year shortly before traveling to Pakistan, where he had a wife, according to law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation.

Investigators hadn't established an immediate connection to the Pakistani Taliban — which had claimed responsibility for the botched bombing in three videos — or any foreign terrorist groups, a law enforcement official told the AP.

"He's claimed to have acted alone, but these are things that have to be investigated," the official said.
Shahzad is the son of a former top Pakistani air force officer and deputy director general of the civil aviation authority, according to Kifyat Ali, the cousin of Faisal Shahzad's father.

Ali told reporters outside a two-story home in an upmarket part of Peshawar, the main city in northwestern Pakistan, that the family had yet to be officially informed of Shahzad's arrest in the United States.

"This is a conspiracy so the (Americans) can bomb more Pashtuns," Ali said, referring to a major ethnic group in Peshawar and the nearby tribal areas of Pakistan and southwest Afghanistan. "He was never linked to any political or religious party here."

He said Faisal often stayed in Peshawar when he came back from the United States.
His mother and father, retired Air Vice Marshall Baharul Haq, had left the house for an undisclosed location because of the media interest.

Pakistani Suspect in custody in NY car bomb attack.

Monday, May 3, 2010

A suspect in last weekend's failed car bomb attack onTimes Square was taken into custody late Monday while trying to leave the country, a law enforcement official said.
The suspect, a Pakistani, was identified at midnight Monday at John F. Kennedy International Airport and was stopped, said the official, who spoke to The Associated Press early Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation.
The suspect has not been named. He was being held in New York.
Law enforcement officials say the suspect recently returned from a trip to Pakistan and bought the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder used in the failed car bomb three weeks ago and paid cash. The officials spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the case.
The SUV was rigged with a crude propane-and-gasoline bomb. It had cheap-looking alarm clocks connected to a 16-ounce can filled with fireworks.
Police said the bomb could have produced "a significant fireball" and sprayed shrapnel with enough force to kill pedestrians and knock out windows.
The SUV was parked on a street lined with Broadway theaters and restaurants and full of people out on a Saturday night.
The SUV was captured on video crossing an intersection at 6:28 p.m. Saturday. A vendor pointed out the Pathfinder to an officer about two minutes later. Times Square, clogged with tourists on a warm evening, was shut down for 10 hours. No one was hurt.
New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne confirmed Monday that investigators had spoken to the SUV's registered owner.
The vehicle identification number had been removed from Pathfinder's dashboard, but it was stamped on the engine and axle, and investigators used it to find the owner of record.
"The discovery of the VIN on the engine block was pivotal in that it led to the identifying the registered owner," Browne said. "It continues to pay dividends."
Investigators tracked the license plates to a used auto parts shop in Stratford, Conn., where they discovered the plates were connected to a different vehicle.
They also spoke to the owner of an auto sales shop in nearby Bridgeport because a sticker on the Pathfinder indicated the SUV had been sold by his dealership. Owner Tom Manis said there was no match between the identification number the officers showed him and any vehicle he sold.

SUV bomb suspect Picture

Sunday, May 2, 2010

Police investigating a terror attack that could have set off a deadly fireball in Times Square focused Sunday on finding a man who was videotaped shedding his shirt near the SUV where the bomb was found.

Prof. Wale Olaitan: Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU)' s Vice Chancellor orderly killed in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Hoodlums yesterday invaded the Ibadan, Oyo State home of the Vice Chancellor of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) Ago Iwoye, Prof. Wale Olaitan, killing his police orderly.

The incident occurred barely 24hours after Olaitan’s appointment.

The orderly was shot twice in the chest and his gun taken away.

The robbers stormed Olaitan’s Oluyole Estate home around 11:25 am in a Toyota Camry car.  They gained access when his wife, Kemi, went to open the gate for them after they had knocked repeatedly.

Olaitan was said to be having breakfast with his family members after returning from church when the robbers struck.

It was gathered that Mrs Olaitan led the robbers to the back of the house, where they sighted the deceased.

They shot him, removed his gun and left the building immediately without taking any item. His remains have been deposited at the morgue of Adeoyo State Hospital, Yemetu, Ibadan.

The Nation gathered that Olaitan had peeped from the window upstairs to find out why it took his wife so long to return to the dining table.

He reportedly recoiled on sighting the robbers, one of whom was said to have pointed a gun at him. He retreated and hid himself in the building with other members of his family.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Miss Olabisi Okuwobi, described the incident as unfortunate.

She said nothing was removed from the house. Okuwobi said the incident would be investigated.

OOU has been in crisis in recent times. Several members of staff were relieved of their jobs in the process of restructuring the institution before Olaitan’s appointment at the weekend.

He was a Deputy Vice Chancellor before his appointment.

Professor Wale Are Olaitan, Vice-Chancellor of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU),escapes assassination.

  • Police orderly killed
By Moshood Adebayo, Abeokuta

Barely 24 hours after he was appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Professor Wale Are Olaitan, has lost his Police orderly, Constable Akila Dauda, to gunmen who struck at his Ibadan home early yesterday.

Daily Sun reliably gathered that the three gunmen invaded the Oluyole Estate private residence of Olaitans about 11.25am and went straight into the room where Dauda was occupying and shot him in the chest.

Before help could reach him, Dauda was said to have died in the presence of his killers who were said to have attempted to reach for their target, Olaitan upstairs, but could not do so due to unspecified reason.

The invasion of Olaitan’s home, Daily Sun learnt, might not be unconnected with the role he allegedly played in the ongoing restructuring in the institution where over 900 staff were relieved of their jobs.

The re-organisation followed recommendations by the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Oye Ibidapo-Obe, who led a visitation panel to the university.

It was not clear whether the incident was an armed robbery or assassination as the hoodlums did not take away any thing from the house except the rifle of the mobile policeman.

Daily Sun reliably gathered that Olaitan’s wife, who was unaware of the “visitors” mission, allegedly opened the entrance gate for the hoodlums.

She was quoted as saying that she had mistaken the killers for guests who had come to felicitate with her husband, who had just been appointed a Vice-Chancellor. As at the time of the attack, both Professor Olaitan, his wife and two children were said to be upstairs. The assailants, according to a source, stormed the Olaitan’s residence in a light blue Toyota Camry.

Attempts to speak with Professor Olaitan was unsuccessful as at the time of filing this report as he was said to be devastated over the incident.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Oyo State, Mr Mohammed Landan, and other top police officers were said to have visited the scene of the incident.

Amateurish Bomb in New York: Times Square cleared as bomb found in parked SUV

NEW YORK – Police found an "amateurish" but potentially powerful bomb in a smoking sport utility vehicle in Times Square, then cleared the streets of thousands of tourists milling through the landmark district so they could dismantle it, authorities said Sunday.

"We avoided what we could have been a very deadly event," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "It certainly could have exploded and had a pretty big fire and a decent amount of explosive impact."
Investigators removed three propane tanks, fireworks, two filled 5-gallon gasoline containers, and two clocks with batteries, electrical wire and other components from the back of the Nissan Pathfinder, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. A black metal box resembling a gun locker was also recovered and will be detonated off site, he said.

Bloomberg called the explosive device "amateurish" and Kelly said the explosives were consumer-grade fireworks but could have caused huge damage on a block of Broadway theaters and restaurants teeming with tourists.
"I think the intent was to cause a significant ball of fire," Kelly said.

No suspects were in custody, although Kelly said a surveillance video showed the car driving west on 45th Street before it parked between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. Police were looking for more video from office buildings that weren't open at the time.

A white robotic police arm broke windows of the black Nissan Pathfinder to remove any explosive materials after a T-shirt vendor alerted police to billowing smoke coming from the back of the vehicle at about 6:30 p.m. Heavily armed police and emergency vehicles shut down the city's busiest streets, teeming with taxis and theatergoers on one of the first summer-like days of the year.

Members of NYPD Bomb Squad
A Connecticut license plate on the vehicle did not match up, Bloomberg said. Police interviewed the Connecticut car owner, who told police he had sent the plates to a nearby junkyard, Bloomberg said.
After the vendor noticed smoke coming from the SUV, police cleared buildings and streets at the so-called "Crossroads of the World"; the south tower of a Marriott hotel was evacuated and several blocks surrounding Times Square remained closed hours later. Officers were deployed around the area with heavy weapons on empty streets in the heart of busy midtown Manhattan.

Economic and Financial crimes Commission (EFCC) arrests Funke Kuti, Femi Kuti’s ex-wife

Thursday, April 29, 2010

Funke, ex-wife of afro-beat maestro, Femi Kuti was yesterday arrested by the operatives of the Economic and Financial crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged N50 million fraud.

Daily Sun gathered that Funke was picked up at about 1:00pm in Ilupeju area of Lagos after failing to honour the invitation of the commission since April 17, 2010.

Funke who worked with the National Sports Lottery (NSL) in Lagos was arrested in connection with N50 million scam in which a lottery winner was allegedly denied his winning prize, by citing frivolous excuses.

Daily Sun gathered that one Alhaji Tunde Ayinde Balogun had emerged winner of the N50 million jackport in the lottery operated by the NSL. Rather than being paid, he was being tossed around.

Balogun’s persistence to claim her prize yielded no results as Funke who is the Group Head, Corporate Services, was alleged to have played a fast one on Balogun by denying him his winning.
Frustrated by the development, Balogun wrote a petition to the EFCC consequent upon which an investigation was launched into the allegation and found Balogun’s claims were found to be true.
The EFCC thereafter invited Funke to come and answer some of the allegations but she failed to show up.

Spokesman of the EFCC, Mr. Femi Babafemi confirmed the arrest to Daily Sun in Abuja. He disclosed that Funke had been brought to Abuja for interrogations.

Moran refused bail

Judy Moran

By ADRIAN LOWE

Gangland widow Judy Moran has been refused bail after a magistrate found she had not met "exceptional circumstances".

Deputy chief magistrate, Jelena Popovic told Moran that her bail application "had not gone well", and that while she maintained concerns about her health and transport issues, there was not enough evidence to qualify her for exceptional ciurcumstances, and therefoe would not be released on bail.

The court heard earlier today that Moran told a friend that a witness in her murder committal hearing would “have the best rude awakening coming to her” if she was bailed.

Moran, 65, had resumed her bail application at the Melbourne Magistrates Court after being charged with the murder of her former brother-in-law, Des "Tuppence" Moran.

Mr Moran was shot dead in Ascot Vale last June. Judy Moran, 65, Suzanne Kane, 45, her de facto husband, Geoffrey "Nuts" Armour, 44, and Michael Farrugia, 45, are charged with Mr Moran's murder and have been committed to stand trial.

Detective Senior Constable Stephen Reidy, in opposing bail, told the court that Judy Moran had been heard on prison telephones telling friend Judy Fyfe that case witness and Des Moran's friend Sandra Cummins was “going to have the best rude awakening coming to her when I get bail you've ever seen”.

"I will fix her up (in) two shakes of a lamb's tail," Moran said.

Detective Senior Constable Reidy said Moran had shown a propensity to destroy evidence and may interefere with witnesses if released.

Earlier her lawyer, Jim Stavris, said Moran had shown exceptional circumstances because of “sensationalised media reporting” around her charge and committal.

He said this included a report that she had had a prison fight with Tania Herman, who was jailed after pleading guilty to the attempted murder of Maria Korp, in an attempt to become the top dog at Dame Phyllis Frost Prison.

Mr Stavris tended an affidavit from Herman in which she said she had never met Moran before the article was published in the Herald Sun newspaper.

"We have both been deeply hurt by the allegations in the Herald Sun," Herman wrote.

"This allegation has defamed our solid and good reputations."

But prosecutor Claire Quinn said Moran had facilitated much of the media attention focused on her.

"Her profile had been deliberately raised by herself," Ms Quinn said. "A lot of media attention is as a result of her own actions.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab video: "Christmas Day Bomber'" Video.

Abdulmutallab training

New footage released appears to show the man charged with trying to blow up a plane on Christmas Day training with al Qaeda in Yemen.

The video seems to show Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab and other men firing weapons at targets, including the Union Flag and the UN flag.

According to ABC News, which obtained and broadcast the tape, the video was produced by al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (Aqap) - a group formed in January 2009.

It was not clear where and when the video was made or whether it was genuine.

Abdulmutallab is charged with attempting to bring down a Detroit-bound jet by detonating explosives hidden in his underwear.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges, but is said to be co-operating with US intelligence agencies interviewing him.

The 23-year-old has allegedly told investigators that Aqap fighters trained him in Yemen, equipped him with a powerful explosive device and told him what to do.

He also warned there were others like him ready to strike, according to US officials.

He is shown on the tape making an apparent martyrdom statement in Arabic.

"The enemy is in your lands with their armies, the Jews and the Christians and their agents," he says.

He also reads several passages from the Koran, adding: "God said if you do not fight back, He will punish you and replace you."

On Monday, the British Ambassador to Yemen escaped a suspected al Qaeda bomb attack on the convoy taking him to work.

Tim Torlot had been on his way to the embassy in the Yemeni capital Sana'a when a suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt threw himself at the vehicles.

Three passers-by were injured and the attacker was killed.

Joseph Sean McVey

Joseph Sean McVey was the armed man spotted at a North Carolina airport parking lot just after Air Force One departed and said he wanted to see the president was to appear before a judge Monday.

Authorities arrested Joseph Sean McVey, 23, of Coshocton, Ohio, on Sunday afternoon at the Asheville Regional Airport and charged him with going armed in terror of the public, a misdemeanor.

A first appearance in court was scheduled for Monday, said Sgt. John Lutz of the Buncombe County jail, where McVey was being held on $100,000 bond.

McVey told an officer in the airport parking lot he wanted to see the president and he had a car equipped with police gear, including a siren and flashing lights, though he did not work in law enforcement, authorities said.

Security was heightened at the airport Sunday because President Barack Obama was leaving after spending the weekend vacationing in Asheville.

Charles Donkor, a Ghanaian Farmer defiles 14 -year-old girl.

Saturday, April 24, 2010

Mpraeso, April 24, GNA -Charles Donkor, a 47-year-old farmer and video operator on Friday, appeared before the Mpraeso Circuit Court, for defiling a 14-year-old primary six pupil. Donkoh, pleaded not guilty to the charge, and has been remanded in police custody for two weeks.

Prosecuting, Detective Police Inspector Christian Apronti told the court, presided over by Mr Alex Owusu Ofori that, the victim, who attends the Ehiawoaewu District Assembly Primary school near Akoase, stays with her mother whiles Donkor, who lived at Tiawiah, goes round the surrounding villages including Ehiawoaewu, showing video films. He said the victim's mother detected that her daughter had been pilfering some items like rice and provisions from her store to Donkor, whenever he comes to the village to show video films, to enable her to watch without paying.

The prosecutor said the victim's mother confronted Donkor and warned him not to allow the girl to enter the video centre again. On April 09, Donkor went to the Ehiawoaewu village on his usual rounds to show his video film and managed to lure the victim into his room after the show around 0030 hours.

He then had sex with the girl whiles her mother was frantically looking for her. The prosecutor said at about 01.00 hours the victim's mother had a tip-off that the girl was in Donkor's room so she went there and after several knocks on the door, the victim came out but took to her heels. A report was made to the police and Donkor was arrested and a medical form was later issued to the victim to attend hospital for medical examination. The report later showed that the girl had been sexually assaulted but Donkor denied having had sex with her.

Gary Gilmore Style: Ronnie Lee Gardner Wants To Die by firing squad.

Friday, April 23, 2010

Ronnie Lee Gardner

This story takes us back to the old wild, wild west days – execution style!

Back in the days when you were convicted of a crime worthy of capital punishment, taken out into the dusty old streets in town, blindfolded, and then a line of riflemen took aim, fired, and that was it… you were executed!

Let’s fast forward now to today – April 23rd, 2010 – A Utah judge has apparently given a death row inmate a choice on the style of execution used to deliver his final punishment.

The choices given to Ronnie Lee Gardner, who has been on Utah’s death row for 25 years and counting, was death by lethal injection or death by firing squad.

And much to the surprise of the entire world who is now reading about this news, Mr. Lee Gardner chosedeath by firing squad.

In fact, Ronnie Lee Gardner put it like this when asked by the judge which he would prefer:

“I would like the firing squad, please…”

According to the HuffingtonPost, of the 35 states with the death penalty on the books, Utah is the only one to use the firing squad as a method of execution since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated capital punishment in 1976.

Two men have died in a hail of bullets since that decision: Gary Gilmore, on Jan. 17, 1977 – after famously uttering the last words, “Let’s do it” – and John Albert Taylor on Jan. 26, 1996.

So let’s do it then!

My only question here is this – does the state of Utah actually have a trained squad of riflemen for this type of execution?

Or do we just grab some random cops who have a day off, pay em’ a couple extra bucks, and just line em’ up to have them pull the trigger?

The Ronnie Lee Gardner execution story is sure to gain more attention as we move closer to execution day.

I’m just wondering if the execution itself will end up on YouTube?

I’m betting that plans to secretly video tape this thing are already underway.

Eugene Terre'Blanche's Sex scandal: Semen found on Terre'Blanche's 'private part'

Eugene Terre'Blanche

Spokesperson for police National Commissioner General Bheki Cele said on Sunday that semen had been found on the body of Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging leader Eugene Terre'Blanche.

"His body was found half naked with semen on his private part. That is not new information, it has always been part of the evidence," said Nonkululeko Mbatha.

Cele told a Sunday newspaper that the "sex issue" had always been there because Terre'Blanche's body had been found with his pants down and "were wet with semen".

However, Cele said there was no condom found on the scene, [as reported in the media last week].

There were sex rumours in the right-wing leader's murder case, that the defence decided to abandon in the Ventersdorp Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Lawyer Puna Moroko, representing one of the two accused of Terre'Blanche's death -- Chris Mahlangu (28) -- told journalists outside the court that his client initially spoke of being sodomised by the AWB leader, but that further questioning had revealed this could not be true.

"He [Mahlangu] mentioned ‘sodomy' to me [but] the consultation was very short ... It didn't satisfy me, it just did not make sense to me, that's why I abandoned it," said Moroko.

"I am not satisfied that there was sodomy and my client accepted my advice."

Adjournment
The court on Wednesday extended the detention of the accused. Magistrate Magaola Foso adjourned the case to May 10 to allow more time for police investigations and a bail application.

"You are in custody until then," Foso told the elder of the two suspects in court.

Terre'Blanche was bludgeoned and hacked to death on April 3 at his farm outside Ventersdorp.

The killing has brought South Africa's long-standing racial tensions to the surface, two months before the country is due to host the Soccer World Cup.

Police in full riot gear guarded the entrance to the courthouse, following last week's clashes between white and black crowds at the suspects' first court appearance. - Sapa

Eugene Terre'blanche's sex abuse scandal: Vatican blames him

Picture of Late Eugene Terre'blanche
ROME. Having previously tried to pin Catholic priest sexual abuse scandals on homosexuals and Satan, the Vatican today issued a statement indicating that from now on the blame will officially rest with Eugene Terre'blanche. "Think about it," said Vatican spokesperson Hippocritas Kidifiddler. "There hasn't been a single new abuse allegation since he died."

According to the official Vatican City report Terre'blanche acted alone and was responsible for the whole of the Catholic Church's long and murky history of sexual abuse stretching back over two centuries.

Kidifiddler said that some of the Church's most revered lawyers and accountants had worked their way down a lengthy list of potential perpetrators, weighing up how plausible they were and considering whether or not the Pope had previously condoned their actions and failed to shred documents with his signature on them.

"After the public didn't seem to buy our original stabs at atheists, fags and Satan, we considered blaming R 'n B, microwave pizzas and Twitter," Kidifiddler said.

"But then someone mentioned this Eugene Terre'blanche, and we just thought: sweeeet."

When asked how Eugene Terre'blanche had managed to abuse children on at least three continents simultaneously, Kidifiddler shrugged and said, "I dunno, he had a fast horse. Who am I, Poirot?"

Kidifiddler stated that the Catholic Church was happy and relieved to have cleared up "this irritating little mystery."

"Now we can all forget about this small matter and get back to doing God's work," he said.

Asked what God's work entailed, he explained that it mostly involved "counting enormous amounts of cash and helping women in the developing world to be pregnant non-stop from puberty to menopause".

Meanwhile South African homophobes and homosexuals alike have reacted angrily to the allegations that Terre'blanche's murder was the result of a sexual encounter that turned lethal.

"To suggest that Eugene Terre'blanche had a secret gay life is deeply offensive to the homosexual community in South Africa," a statement from gay rights group Twinkly Rainbows read yesterday. "As if we would have let him on to Somerset Road with a boep like that. Shudder."

The AWB has also furiously rejected the rumours.

"If our beloved Leier had been having gay sexcapades with anyone, it would of been me," said new leader Andre Visagie, struggling to keep back tears.

"He only had to say the word and I could of touched him on his studio all night long."
