  • Pittsburgh Bomb Squad Called To 11th Street At Liberty Avenue

Police detonate a microwave oven found on the Pittsburgh Marathon route that authorities suspected of containing an explosive device.

A microwave oven containing pasta -- an a suspected explosive device -- was detonated Sunday morning at the finish line of the 2010 Pittsburgh Marathon, which attracted tens of thousands of people to the city.
The Pittsburgh Bomb Squad secured the area sidewalk where the microwave was found in front of the Greyhound Transportation Center at 11th Street and Liberty Avenue. Police technicians then detonated the microwave oven and removed the device from the scene and reopened the area.

Pittsburgh Police Chief Nate Harper and Public Safety Director Michael Huss are converging at the city's Emergency Operations Center as an investigation continues. Police are trying to determine what the device was.

For a period of time, police diverted a portion of the half-marathon away from the scene. There were no injuries.
In addition to the Pittsburgh Marathon, traffic in and around Pittsburgh is expected to be heavy for the Pittsburgh Penguins playoff game, University of Pittsburgh graduation and the International Eucharistic Rosary March, all of which are scheduled to take place during the early afternoon.

The discovery of the suspected explosive in Pittsburgh comes on the heels of a car bomb found in New York's Times Square Saturday night.
