Dimeji Bankole

To douse anxiety over the alleged plot to remove House Speaker Dimeji Bankole, the House of Representatives yesterday held a closed door session.

Apart from the impeachment plot, the lawmakers were also said to have used the closed session to discuss discrepancies in the 2010 budget and the modus operandi to be adopted in the consideration of the Constitution amendment.

The lawmakers who came back from a two-week Easter break dissolved into an Executive Session chaired by Deputy Speaker, Usman Nafada.

Bankole is reported to be stranded in the United Kingdom due to the closure of air space in parts of Europe due to the volcanic eruption in Iceland which triggered ash dust.

The Executive Session which lasted over an hour was said to have been a forum for the lawmakers to rub minds and for the leadership of the House to plead for calm and understanding of members.

A reliable source who attended the closed session told our reporters that Nafada appealed for the understanding of those pushing to unseat Bankole.

According to him, Nafada attempted to pacify aggrieved members and assured them that their grievances would be sorted out.

The source said that Bankole’s loyalists also used the session to pass around the Speaker’s appeal to members to sheath their sword in the interest of the House.
