Nigeria's Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar

FOLLOWING the public declaration of his return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at its national secretariat on Wednesday, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned his membership of the Action Congress (AC).

His decision to resign from the party, on which platform he contested the 2007 presidential election, was contained in a press statement he signed and made available to the Nigerian Tribune.

The former vice-president said he took the decision in view of his aborted efforts at building a strong opposition through the AC, adding that factionalisation, intrigues and divided loyalty in the party frustrated his efforts.

“I wish to convey to you my decision to formally resign my membership of Action Congress (AC) with immediate effect. Sadly, my efforts to help build a strong national opposition party have been frustrated by factionalisation, intrigues and divided loyalties to particular individuals. These factors have made opposition parties incapable of rising to the challenges of national leadership,” he noted.

Alhaji Abubakar said his decision to join the party, in the first instance, was informed by the deliberate undermining of values and ideals of the PDP by some anti-democratic forces that infiltrated the party in 2007, adding that he had no choice then but to team with the AC.

“Even after my reluctant exit from the PDP, the bond of brotherhood and goodwill between me and other founding leaders of the party remained intact.

“Besides, the PDP is currently engaged in genuine reconciliation with aggrieved members, including myself, who were forced to leave by circumstances beyond their control. I have decided to embrace the party’s policy of reconciliation,” he added.

The former vice-president said he was proud to have associated with AC leaders, saying his association with the party had greatly enriched his life.
