ANC treads lightly over Julius Malema's Issues

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

The ANC on Tuesday said Julius Malema had not yet been formally charged with misconduct and may not face a disciplinary hearing at all.

While the disciplinary process is still officially underway, President Jacob Zuma and his officials are now considering the league’s request for the action against its leader to be dropped.

The ANC’s top brass met with the league, including Malema, on Monday night.

This issue could become a litmus test for Zuma’s political strength. But for the moment, ANC Deputy Secretary General Thandi Modise said the media got it wrong when it claimed Julius Malema defied Zuma.

"The media chose to say that the ANC banned its own songs - the ANC did nothing of the sort," said Modise.

The disciplinary wheels are in motion but ANCYL Secretary General Vuyiswa Tulelo said by taking on Malema the ANC was taking on the league

"Anything and everything he says he does it in the name of the youth league," Tulelo said.

That is a fight Zuma may want to avoid
